The Institute on Religion and Public Policy applauds a statement released by the Saudi Council of Senior Clerics condemning violence by Islamic militants and deeming helping terrorists as “one of the greatest sins.” The statement went on to say that participating in acts of terror is “a dangerous criminal act punishable by Islamic law.”
The statement from the Council, Saudi Arabia's highest religious body, came a day after Saudi authorities arrested at least 11 suspected militants and seized a large weapons cache in southern Jizan province.
“This courageous statement of leadership from the Saudi Council of Senior Clerics deligitimizes the use of Islam by militants and extremists as a pretext to carry out acts of violence,” stated Institute President Joseph K. Grieboski. “The Council of Clerics has reaffirmed that terrorism is not an act of faith; it is an act of politics.”
