World Council of Religious Leaders First Meeting in Bangkok

BANGKOK, June 11 -- Asia's ancient religious heritage and today's technology walk together to pray and work for peace in a live worldwide webcast tomorrow.

The first meeting of the World Council of Religious Leaders can be seen live during the next 24 hours on the website of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University from 9:00 am Thailand time June 12. More than 100 religious leaders from around the world representing 13 religions will attend.

'Beyond Tolerance and Pleasure' is the title of a message to be delivered by Thailand's beloved Buddhist scholar, Most Venerable P.A. Payutto (Phra Dhammapitaka).

Representatives of all major world religion's will pray during the opening of the World Council of Religious Leaders meeting June 12-14 which opens at Buddhamonthon in a ceremony presided over by Thailand's Buddhist Supreme Patriarch. HRH Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn officially opens the event.

World Millennium Peace Summit Secretary-General Bawa Jain who guided the WMPS two years ago and Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University Rector Phra Thepsophon co-host the event.

The meeting continues Thursday and Friday June 13 and 14 and includes signing a Charter and planning follow-through to give religious, moral and spiritual counsel to the United Nations and others who act for world peace, to protect the environment and to alleviate poverty.

Over 1,000 religious and spiritual leaders met at the United Nations in New York in August 2000 and pledged to act to establish a permanent religious organization for world peace. This week's founding meeting of the World Council of Religious Leaders is a follow-through.
